A popular saying in today’s culture when you are wanting to follow your dream is, “Do what makes you happy”. I am sure we’ve all heard it a time or two, but the meaning behind it is quite a worldly view, isn’t it? We’re surrounded by “doing what makes you happy”, can mean things like starting an Onlyfans account. Doing what makes us happy, but not aligning them with God’s commands is a fast way to failure, even if it appears to be successful. See, in the end, you won’t succeed in the most important ways, which is honoring God and ultimately setting yourself up for an eternity spent with Him. Following your dreams as a christian has to mean following God’s plan for your life. So, before you dive head first into your dreams, make sure they align with God’s word.
I want to preface this by saying: God does allow you to have a choice. There may even be more than one right choice. However, when considering your dream there are guidelines to follow to ensure you are pleasing the Lord. I know sometimes those lines are blurry, I’ve struggled with this myself, which I will share in an upcoming post. BUT, it’s important to understand what God wants from us so we can understand His unique calling on our life. The world may be telling you to go one direction, meanwhile God is telling you to go the opposite. This can be confusing and hard. I encourage you to dig deeper in to His word and pray with intent, as His way is the ONLY way.
Some Guidelines to Consider When Following Your Dreams
Will Following Your Dream Honor God?
This should be the first question you ask yourself. If I go in to this career or take this opportunity, will it honor God or does it cause me to stumble and sin? This could include many things that go against the bible such as, lying, stealing, prioritizing the wrong things, dishonoring your body, causing others to stumble, to name a few. If your answer is yes to any of those, it’s time to reconsider. Following your dream should only bring glory to God and show a Godly character. This way others can’t even question if you are believer by your choices.
Are You Obeying His Word While Following Your Dreams?
When analyzing your life, are you able to consistently obey the word? As christians, this should be one of the top things we strive for, although we will never be perfect humans. You may want to follow His plan, but if you’re not obeying the rest, you can’t obey your calling. The more you obey the word, the clearer the plan becomes. You will truly be able to follow your dreams, because His “dream” for you will be better than anything you can give yourself.
How Does Following Your Dream Affect Your Family?
After God, your family should come before your dream. If the dream you are chasing is causing you to prioritize it over them (or God), then that is a red flag. If you are not married yet, it is still important to consider your future family to a degree. However, being single allows more freedom and less responsibility in following your dreams. Just remember to still make choices that honor God and He will bring the right person in to your life. Maybe you’ll even share the same dream.
I’m not saying that if you are married and have kids that you can’t follow that dream you feel in your heart. But it may look a little different and require a modified plan, or may even need to be postponed.
How Do You Know You're Following God's Plan For You
I wish I could give you an answer on how you will know if you’re following God’s plan, but I can’t. The only thing you can do it PRAY, READ your Bible, OBEY the word and let Him LEAD you. This may require patiences and discipline, but in His perfect timing it will be revealed to you.
Following Your Dreams Can Mean Only Raising Children
This section is for my mamas, especially to littles, like myself. Raising children to love the Lord and serve Him while taking care of your home IS A CAREER. To be honest it’s arguably one of the most important ones. If this is the choice you are able to make or feel that God wants you to make, please do so. I’ll discuss homemaking in another blog post, but just know it’s a very special opportunity. Do not let anyone tell you that it is not a job, because raising kids is no joke. You are raising souls to further God’s kingdom and that is not a small task. This may or may not be your calling, but if it is, embrace it. Rest in the fact that you are doing kingdom’s work, especially when it gets hard.
Risk Is Included When You Pursue God's Plan
The last thing I want to talk about is sometimes you gotta take a risk to follow a dream. If that dream you feel called to is scary because it takes you out of your comfort zone, do it anyways. That career doesn’t make as much money as you hoped for, but you feel God pulling you towards it, do it anyways. Maybe you don’t feel like you have the right skills or knowledge, but you know it’s what you’re called to, do it anyways. These fears are a lie from the devil in his attempt to steer you from God’s plan He has for you. Always push forward as long as it lines up with the word of God.
Lies You May Hear From The Devil When Following Your Dream
People may say you’re not good enough, but God says, “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
The world may say you should be making more, you’re falling behind, you need to be able to buy this or that, but God says, “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways” (Proverbs 19:1).
Satan may say you don’t have what it takes, but God says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Encouragement From Me To You
I want to encourage all of you to get close to God and really know Him and His word. Doing this ensures you’re pleasing Him in what you choose to do with your life. And if you haven’t been making the right choices, that’s okay. You are a child of a loving, forgiving father who wants the best for you. It’s never too late. Following your dreams can mean pursuing what you love while still honoring God. The only difference is His plan is so much better than ours. You will be blessed more by following Him than we ever will by following our own dreams.
